June 4, 2006: Hi Michael,
I have spread your fame far and wide, as far off Nashville, TN. My daughter
and I visited the state capitol and went to the outer office of the
governor, where we saw the Zorthian murals ringing the room telling the
history of Tennessee. Andrew Jackson ( he said that he was not
related),Assistant to the Governor was very gracious and showed us around
and talked about the murals with us. I told him about your DVD and when he
seemed interested I asked him if he would like a copy. He seemed quite
excited about it and said the State Historian would also be very excited and
thrilled to see it. So I'm sending it off tomorrow.
I hope you have a fine time on your travels......................Jane
September 1, 2005: The Pasadena Weekly features the new Zorthian DVD in today's issue:
by Desiree Morales
August 29, 2005: "Z and I finally got around to watching the video you made of Jirayr Zorthian and enjoyed it immensely. What an amazing and talented character! Nicely done, a real tribute. Your music highlighted it well." - Ken DelPonte, San Francisco
August 14, 2005: "Sometime in the
1990's the LA Weekly had an amazing
multi-page and multi-photo
spread on Jirayr. I've kept that issue and ever since
then I've thought this is our (armenians') Dali right
there. Although I don't know his artistic outlook
well, his lifestyle was truly surreal and focused. My
colleague is a physicist and a very well read Feynman fan. When I asked
him if he'd be willing to check out the DVD for a possible review,
he immediately went into some of the details between Feynman and
Zorthian and how Feynman had to give up some of
his effort to teach Zorthian physics because
everything he told Jirayr reminded him of sex." - Asbed, Los Angeles
August 8, 2005: "Picked up a copy yesterday at Webster's. Very much enjoyed it." - Jim, Sierra Madre, CA
"Your show on Jerry Zorthian really captured his spirit. Very well done." -Lynn, Altadena
"I watched the Zorthian DVD last night. Amazing! Fascinating! And your music is superb."
- Jamie Mcpherson, Publisher and Editor, Pasadena Living Magazine
"Fabulous job on the Zorthian video. It is a really important piece of Pasadena's history and the story was told beautifully. Well done!" - Mack, Altadena
"What a wonderful and fascinating story. Thanks!" - Amy, Pasadena
"Terrific!! Wow! A great piece of work - the DVD on Zorthian was beautifully done. Your skills are excellent - Pamela, Pasadena
"I was thoroughly entertained and educated with your production of Jirayr Zorthian. It made me feel like I knew him, or certainly wanted to get to know him. What a delightful man! Your music was regal in the introduction, the way he should have been introduced. The transitions flowed nicely and I felt the content and the musical overlay was congruent. Dabney must be so proud.
"Your infinite talents were just touched upon in this project and it is quite professional. This should be in a library somewhere soon. I hope you are happy with such an excellent production. The editing was just right, the chapter format is great for revisiting. ... I sure would like to see more of 'All the World's a Stage.'"
- Marsha, Pasadena
"Jirayr Zorthian was one of the most fascinating characters of the art world. The DVD was exceptionally well photographed, and the full frame of Zorthian's face was also exceptional. It allowed careful study of his feelings for life, art and his lust for living. The editing was excellent." - John, La Canada Flintridge
From two e-mails from Dabney Zorthian, 2005
"Seeing Jirayr; the miracle of capture - close ups, his voice, his lips, his art, the ranch, what a project - thank you utterly - Brad's interview, angles - how do you narrow everything into cohesion? AWS is a superb inlet outlet. Thank you so much, Michael."
"I was thrilled to receive the Jirayr DVD in our mailbox. So many enthusiastic faces approach me on the street, at parties, wherever I go. "I had no idea," "what a life he led," etc. You sent him to a vast audience, and are making him even more famous and comprehensible. Thank you Michael for this exhilarating documentation. [When asked where to send a donation in Jirayr's name, Dabney wrote: "My charity of choice, so far, is a Palestinian Israel non-violent support group. I'll find out the information to forward to you."]
"In admiration, in great appreciation, Dabney."
